About

I currently teach ethnomusicology at Cornell University, and previously taught at the University of Maryland, College Park. Besides my research into Turkish contemporary music making (particularly, the music industry centered in Istanbul, and the production of traditional/folk/art musics in the recording studio context), I have also published papers on aesthetics in contemporary electronic music and audio recording production. My book Music in Turkey: Experiencing Music, Expressing Culture, was recently published by Oxford University Press.

With Graham St. John, I created dancecult.net – a comprehensive collaborative bibliography and web resource of EDMC research, and in 2009, we launched Dancecult: Journal of Electronic Dance Music Culture http://dj.dancecult.net – the world's first peer-reviewed journal dedicated to the research of EDM.

Besides writing and teaching interests, I've been active as a professional oud performer and recording artist, and have over a decade of experience with audio engineering, sound design, and electroacoustic music composition.
